San Francisco packs an outsized share of the world’s technology, venture capital and artificial intelligence business into a compact city of about 47 square miles. Software companies and AI labs fill offices in SoMa and Mission Bay, UCSF’s Mission Bay campus anchors a deep life sciences cluster, and the Financial District still houses banks, asset managers and law firms. Tourism, conventions at Moscone Center and a celebrated restaurant culture round out an economy that draws visitors from around the world.

The Bay Area’s airports are busy, and when low clouds roll in, arrival delays at SFO are common. Flying private gives you other options: Oakland and Hayward across the bay, Buchanan Field in Concord for the East Bay, Gnoss Field in Novato for Marin and Half Moon Bay on the coast, each a direct flight from Los Angeles, Lake Tahoe or the Central Coast. Weekends here often mean Napa or Sonoma, an hour or more away by car, along with cable cars, the Ferry Building, Golden Gate Park and dinner in the Mission or North Beach.

Things to do in San Francisco

When to go. San Francisco’s warmest, clearest weather usually arrives in September and October, after the summer fog that keeps July and August surprisingly cool. October brings Fleet Week, with the Blue Angels over the bay, and the free Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in Golden Gate Park. Outside Lands fills the park in August. Winter is the rainy season, though dry, crisp days are common, and spring brings wildflowers to the hills of Marin.

  1. 01

    Golden Gate Bridge

The city’s signature landmark can be walked or biked end to end, and the overlooks at Crissy Field, Fort Point and Battery Spencer in the Marin Headlands frame it best.

  2. 02

    Alcatraz Island

Ferries from Pier 33 carry visitors to the former federal penitentiary, where an acclaimed audio tour narrated by former inmates and guards leads through the cellhouse. Tickets often sell out, so book ahead.

  3. 03

    Ferry Building Marketplace

The restored 1898 ferry terminal on the Embarcadero houses Bay Area food purveyors, cafes and restaurants, and its farmers market draws crowds several mornings a week.

  4. 04

    Golden Gate Park

Longer than New York’s Central Park, it holds the de Young Museum, the California Academy of Sciences, the Japanese Tea Garden and the Conservatory of Flowers among its meadows and lakes.

  5. 05

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

SFMOMA’s expanded building in SoMa holds one of the country’s major collections of modern and contemporary art, with a strong focus on photography and a living wall of native plants.

  6. 06

    Muir Woods National Monument

Across the Golden Gate in Marin County, this old-growth coast redwood grove sits a short drive from the city. Parking and shuttle reservations are required, so plan ahead.
