Truckee began as a railroad and logging town on the Central Pacific line over Donner Pass, and its historic downtown still lines the tracks with brick and timber storefronts. Today it is the hub of North Lake Tahoe’s ski and mountain life, close to Palisades Tahoe, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, as well as Northstar and Sugar Bowl. Private communities such as Martis Camp and Lahontan have made the area a major second-home market, and a growing number of residents now live and work here full time.

Truckee Tahoe Airport sits between downtown and Northstar, a few minutes from the lifts and the north shore. The alternative is driving Interstate 80 over Donner Summit, where winter storms bring chain controls and closures, or landing in Reno and driving up the canyon. Flying in directly makes a Friday-to-Sunday ski weekend from Los Angeles or San Diego realistic. In summer, visitors come for Donner Lake, mountain biking, golf, paddleboarding in Tahoe City and Kings Beach, and outdoor concerts and theater along the shore.

Things to do in Truckee

When to go. Winter is Truckee’s main draw, with ski season usually running from December into April and deep snowpacks in big years. Summer brings warm days and cool nights for hiking, biking and lake time, and the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival plays at Sand Harbor in July and August. Fall is quiet and crisp, with golden aspens. Storms on Donner Summit can disrupt road travel for hours, so plan winter trips with some flexibility.

  1. 01

    Palisades Tahoe

Host of the 1960 Winter Olympics, the resort combines two mountains linked by a base-to-base gondola, known for steep terrain, big bowls and a lively village.

  2. 02

    Northstar California

Just south of Truckee, Northstar offers family-friendly groomers, terrain parks and a village with an outdoor ice rink, and becomes a lift-served mountain bike park in summer.

  3. 03

    Donner Memorial State Park

On the shore of Donner Lake, the park’s High Sierra Crossing Museum tells the story of the Donner Party and the emigrants and railroad builders who crossed these mountains.

  4. 04

    Historic Downtown Truckee

Commercial Row’s restored 19th-century buildings house restaurants, bars, outfitters and shops, and the Amtrak California Zephyr still stops at the depot.

  5. 05

    Donner Lake

West of town, this clear mountain lake offers public piers, beaches, kayaking and fishing, with Donner Pass and its historic railroad tunnels above.

  6. 06

    Sand Harbor

On Lake Tahoe’s Nevada shore, granite boulders, clear turquoise water and sandy coves make this one of the lake’s best beaches, and it hosts a summer Shakespeare festival.
