Sacramento runs on state government. The Capitol, dozens of state agencies and the lobbyists, trade associations and law firms that work with them keep a steady stream of officials and executives moving in and out, especially while the Legislature is in session. Health care is another major employer, with Sutter Health headquartered in the region and UC Davis Health downtown, and the surrounding Sacramento Valley is one of the most productive farming regions in the country, which is why the city calls itself America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital.

For a hearing, a meeting with agency staff or a day of lobbying, flying private makes a same-day round trip from Los Angeles or San Diego realistic. Sacramento Executive Airport sits just a few miles south of downtown, with Sacramento International, McClellan and Mather also nearby. Beyond the Capitol, the city is a natural base for the Sierra foothills: the Gold Country towns along Highway 49 are less than an hour away, Napa is a similar drive, and Lake Tahoe is roughly two hours east. Visitors also come for Old Sacramento, Kings games and a strong restaurant scene.

Things to do in Sacramento

When to go. Spring and fall are Sacramento’s best seasons, with warm days and mild evenings. Summers are hot and dry, often topping 100°F, though an evening breeze from the Delta usually cools the nights. The California State Fair runs at Cal Expo in July, and the Farm-to-Fork Festival celebrates the region’s food in September. The Legislature is busiest in late August as bill deadlines arrive, and winter brings rain and occasional valley fog.
