Things to do in Tucson

Tucson is Arizona’s second-largest city, set in a desert basin ringed by five mountain ranges and some of the densest saguaro forests anywhere. The University of Arizona, with its strengths in optics, planetary science and astronomy, anchors the economy alongside Raytheon’s missile business, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, a large healthcare sector and a cluster of optics and aerospace companies. Mountaintop observatories on Kitt Peak and Mount Graham make the region a center of astronomy, and Tucson was the first city in the United States designated a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, for food traditions that run back thousands of years.

  1. 01

    Saguaro National Park

Split into districts east and west of the city, the park protects forests of giant saguaro cactus, with scenic loop drives, desert trails and petroglyphs at Signal Hill.

  2. 02

    Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum

Part zoo, part botanical garden and part natural history museum, this largely outdoor museum west of town introduces the animals and plants of the Sonoran Desert, from javelinas to hummingbirds.

  3. 03

    Mission San Xavier del Bac

Completed in the late 1700s on the Tohono O’odham Nation south of the city, the “White Dove of the Desert” is a masterpiece of Spanish Colonial architecture and still an active parish.

  4. 04

    Pima Air & Space Museum

One of the largest aviation museums in the world displays hundreds of aircraft across indoor hangars and outdoor grounds, from World War II bombers to a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird.

  5. 05

    Sabino Canyon

In the Santa Catalina foothills, a narrated tram climbs a desert canyon of seasonal pools and cottonwoods, and trails lead to swimming holes and Seven Falls.

  6. 06

    Mount Lemmon

The Catalina Highway climbs from saguaros to pine forest in about an hour, reaching a summit village, hiking trails and a small ski area where temperatures run far cooler than the city.
