Mendocino began as a 19th-century lumber port on headlands above the Pacific, and its New England–style wooden houses, water towers and church spires have barely changed since. The village later became an artists’ colony and has long stood in for New England on film, most famously as Cabot Cove in Murder, She Wrote. Tourism, inns, galleries, restaurants and small farms sustain the local economy, while the Anderson Valley inland has become known for pinot noir, sparkling wine and apple orchards.
Mendocino is remote by design. The drive from San Francisco takes three and a half hours or more on winding Highway 128 or Highway 1, and many visitors find the road the hardest part of the trip. Little River Airport sits a few miles south of the village, so a private flight puts you at the coast in time for a sunset walk along the headlands. Visitors spend their days hiking coastal trails, exploring tide pools, watching whales, kayaking the Big River and touring Anderson Valley wineries, with Fort Bragg’s Glass Beach and Skunk Train a short drive north.

When to go. September and October typically bring the clearest, warmest weather on the Mendocino coast, after summer mornings that often begin in fog.
