Things to do in Mendocino

Mendocino began as a 19th-century lumber port on headlands above the Pacific, and its New England–style wooden houses, water towers and church spires have barely changed since. The village later became an artists’ colony and has long stood in for New England on film, most famously as Cabot Cove in Murder, She Wrote. Tourism, inns, galleries, restaurants and small farms sustain the local economy, while the Anderson Valley inland has become known for pinot noir, sparkling wine and apple orchards.

  1. 01

    Mendocino Headlands State Park

Trails circle the village atop dramatic bluffs with sea arches, blowholes and hidden coves, offering whale watching in season and wildflowers in spring.

  2. 02

    Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens

Just south of Fort Bragg, these gardens stretch from rhododendron and heather collections to a coastal bluff trail overlooking the Pacific.

  3. 03

    Glass Beach

At MacKerricher State Park in Fort Bragg, decades of waves have polished discarded glass into colorful pebbles. Collecting is prohibited, so enjoy it in place.

  4. 04

    Skunk Train

The historic railroad runs scenic excursions from Fort Bragg into the redwoods along Pudding Creek, and offers pedal-powered rail bikes on the tracks.

  5. 05

    Point Cabrillo Light Station

This restored 1909 lighthouse stands on a headland between Mendocino and Fort Bragg, with a museum, keepers’ houses and a marine science exhibit.

  6. 06

    Anderson Valley

Inland along Highway 128, this cool valley around Boonville and Philo is known for pinot noir, sparkling wine, apple cider and relaxed tasting rooms.
