Prescott served as the capital of the Arizona Territory and still feels like it, with Victorian homes on shady streets, a stately courthouse on a tree-filled plaza and the saloons of Whiskey Row facing it across Montezuma Street. Set at more than 5,000 feet among pine forest and granite boulders, the town has become a favorite for retirees, second-home owners and Phoenix families escaping summer heat. Healthcare, tourism, government and education drive the economy, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s western campus makes aviation part of local life, with student pilots keeping Prescott Regional Airport busy.

The drive from Phoenix takes around two hours, more when weekend traffic stacks up on the highways north, and from Southern California it is most of a day. Flying private into Prescott Regional puts you a few minutes from the courthouse square, with time for dinner on Whiskey Row the evening you arrive. The town makes a good base for exploring the surrounding area: paddling among the Granite Dells at Watson Lake, hiking Thumb Butte, browsing the hillside town of Jerome or continuing on to Sedona about an hour and a half away.

Things to do in Prescott

When to go. Prescott enjoys four mild seasons. Summer highs usually stay in the 80s and low 90s, making it a popular retreat from the desert, and Prescott Frontier Days, billed as the world’s oldest rodeo, takes place around the Fourth of July. Monsoon storms roll through in July and August. Fall is clear and comfortable, and in December the town calls itself Arizona’s Christmas City, with the courthouse lighting and holiday parade. Winters bring occasional light snow.
