Sierra Vista grew up beside Fort Huachuca, the historic Army post at the foot of the Huachuca Mountains that is now home to the Army’s intelligence training center and its network command. The fort and the defense contractors that support it are the backbone of the local economy, along with healthcare, retail and a growing retiree population drawn by the mild climate at about 4,600 feet. The city calls itself the Hummingbird Capital of the United States, and the canyons of the Huachucas and the San Pedro River draw birders from around the world.

The drive from Tucson takes about an hour and a half, and from Phoenix more than three hours, so contractors, military visitors and families often find it simpler to fly private into Sierra Vista Municipal Airport, which shares its runways with the fort’s Libby Army Airfield. The surrounding corner of Arizona is full of character: the old mining town of Bisbee, Tombstone and its Western history, the vineyards and tasting rooms of Sonoita and Elgin, the caves at Kartchner Caverns and the grasslands and border views of Coronado National Memorial.

Things to do in Sierra Vista

When to go. Sierra Vista’s elevation keeps the climate milder than Tucson’s, with warm summers and cool, sunny winters. Spring migration and late summer are prime time for birders, when hummingbird numbers peak in the mountain canyons. The July-through-September monsoon turns the grasslands green with dramatic afternoon storms. Fall is pleasant for exploring Bisbee and the wineries, and Tombstone’s Helldorado Days celebration takes place in October.
