Phoenix is Arizona’s capital and the center of a metro area of roughly five million people that fills the Salt River Valley. The economy has moved far beyond its old reliance on cotton, citrus and cattle: semiconductor fabs in north Phoenix and Chandler, the Mayo Clinic and Banner Health, banking and insurance operations, a steady construction boom and Arizona State University in neighboring Tempe all keep executives, engineers and physicians on the move across a valley where meetings can be forty miles apart.

Sky Harbor sits close to downtown, but the Valley is also ringed with capable general aviation airports, including Deer Valley, Scottsdale, Falcon Field in Mesa and Goodyear on the west side. Flying private means starting from whichever field is closest to home and going direct to Tucson, Sedona, Prescott, Lake Havasu or a small airport in a neighboring state, skipping the long walk through a busy terminal. Visitors come for the Desert Botanical Garden, sunrise hikes up Camelback Mountain, the Heard Museum, resort spas, hundreds of golf courses and the Cactus League, which brings half of Major League Baseball’s teams to the Valley each spring.

Things to do in Phoenix

When to go. Phoenix is at its best from October through April, when days are warm, skies are clear and patio dining is in full swing. February and March bring Cactus League spring training, which fills hotels and golf tee sheets across the Valley. Summer is extreme, with highs regularly above 110 degrees, and the July-through-September monsoon can bring dust storms and sudden thunderstorms, though resort rates drop sharply for travelers willing to brave the heat.

  1. 01

    Desert Botanical Garden

Set among the red buttes of Papago Park, this garden showcases cacti, agaves and wildflowers from the world’s deserts along easy trails, with seasonal evening events and luminaria walks in December.

  2. 02

    Heard Museum

One of the country’s leading museums of American Indian art, the Heard presents historic and contemporary work, including a celebrated collection of Hopi katsina dolls, in a Spanish Colonial Revival building near downtown.

  3. 03

    Camelback Mountain

The city’s signature peak rises between Phoenix and Paradise Valley, and its Echo Canyon and Cholla trails are short but steep climbs to sweeping views across the Valley. Start early in warm months.

  4. 04

    Musical Instrument Museum

In north Phoenix, MIM displays thousands of instruments from nearly every country, with wireless headsets that play performances as you walk through the galleries, plus a hands-on room for trying instruments yourself.

  5. 05

    South Mountain Park and Preserve

One of the largest municipal parks in the United States, South Mountain offers miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, ancient petroglyphs and the Dobbins Lookout view over the city.

  6. 06

    Roosevelt Row

Downtown’s arts district mixes murals, galleries, coffee shops and restaurants in converted bungalows, and comes alive on the First Friday art walk each month.
