Things to do in Lake Tahoe

Stateline sits on the south shore of Lake Tahoe right on the California line, where a cluster of casino resorts meets the town of South Lake Tahoe. Heavenly Mountain Resort straddles both states with runs overlooking the lake, and the area draws skiers in winter and boaters, hikers and beachgoers in summer. Tourism, gaming and hospitality drive the local economy, and the Nevada side of the lake is popular with second-home owners attracted in part by the state’s lack of personal income tax.

  1. 01

    Heavenly Mountain Resort

Spanning California and Nevada, Heavenly offers skiing with lake views from many runs, and a gondola rises from the heart of the south shore’s village.

  2. 02

    Emerald Bay State Park

On the California side, this bay with its small island is one of the most photographed places at the lake, with Vikingsholm, a Scandinavian-style mansion, on its shore.

  3. 03

    Edgewood Tahoe

This lakeside golf course and resort hosts an annual celebrity golf tournament each July and offers dining with views across the water.

  4. 04

    Zephyr Cove

North of Stateline on the Nevada shore, this beach resort offers swimming, paddleboarding and boat rentals, along with cruises on a paddle-wheel boat to Emerald Bay.

Within walking distance of the casinos, this park offers hiking trails that climb into the forest with views of the lake and links to the Tahoe Rim Trail.

  6. 06

On the lake’s northeast shore, this state park is known for clear turquoise water, granite boulders and the summer Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival.
