Stateline sits on the south shore of Lake Tahoe right on the California line, where a cluster of casino resorts meets the town of South Lake Tahoe. Heavenly Mountain Resort straddles both states with runs overlooking the lake, and the area draws skiers in winter and boaters, hikers and beachgoers in summer. Tourism, gaming and hospitality drive the local economy, and the Nevada side of the lake is popular with second-home owners attracted in part by the state’s lack of personal income tax.

Driving to the south shore from Reno takes about an hour and a half over mountain passes that can be slowed or closed in winter storms, and from the Bay Area the trip often takes four hours or more.
