Elko is the commercial center of northeastern Nevada and the hub of one of the most productive gold-mining regions in the world, with major mines along the Carlin Trend nearby. Mining companies, contractors and suppliers keep engineers, managers and executives flowing through town, alongside ranching, healthcare, Great Basin College and a strong Basque heritage dating back to the sheepherders who settled the region.

Elko is remote, about four hours from Reno and three from Salt Lake City by car, so flying is the practical way in for business travelers. Elko Regional Airport is right next to town, and flying private lets mining teams move between Elko, other mine sites and corporate offices on their own schedule. Leisure visitors come for the Ruby Mountains, with Lamoille Canyon and alpine lakes just outside town, along with family-style Basque dinners and the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, held each winter.
