Things to do in Monterey

Monterey was California’s capital under Spanish and Mexican rule, and later a sardine-canning center made famous by John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. Today the peninsula’s economy rests on tourism, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and a group of institutions that includes the Naval Postgraduate School and the Defense Language Institute. The neighboring Salinas Valley, often called the Salad Bowl of the World, supplies much of the country’s lettuce and greens, and Pacific Grove, Carmel-by-the-Sea and Pebble Beach complete the peninsula.

  1. 01

    Monterey Bay Aquarium

Built in a former cannery on the edge of the bay, the aquarium is known for its towering kelp forest exhibit, sea otters, jellyfish galleries and open-ocean tank.

  2. 02

    Pebble Beach and 17-Mile Drive

The scenic toll road winds past the Lone Cypress, rocky coves and mansions to Pebble Beach Golf Links, a frequent U.S. Open host open to public play.

  3. 03

    Carmel-by-the-Sea

This walkable village of storybook cottages, galleries, wine tasting rooms and restaurants ends at a white-sand beach, with Carmel Mission a short drive away.

  4. 04

    Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

South of Carmel, trails follow granite headlands and hidden coves where sea otters, harbor seals and seasonal whales are often spotted. Arrive early, as parking fills quickly.

  5. 05

    Cannery Row

The waterfront street immortalized by Steinbeck now holds restaurants, hotels, tasting rooms and shops in restored cannery buildings, with the bay steps away.

  6. 06

    Big Sur

Highway 1 continues south past Bixby Creek Bridge and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park along one of the world’s great coastlines. Check road conditions, as slides can close sections.
