When you land

Things to do in Palm Springs

Palm Springs became Hollywood’s desert retreat in the middle of the 20th century, and that era left a remarkable collection of midcentury modern homes, banks and civic buildings by architects such as Albert Frey, William Krisel and E. Stewart Williams. The resort cities of the Coachella Valley stretch southeast from here through Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells and La Quinta, with luxury resorts, country clubs and well over a hundred golf courses. Hospitality, real estate, second homes and health care drive the local economy.

  1. 01

    Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

Rotating tram cars climb more than 8,000 feet from the desert floor to Mount San Jacinto State Park, where trails, pine forest and cooler air wait at the top.

  2. 02

    Indian Canyons

On Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians land just south of town, trails follow streams through palm oases in Palm, Andreas and Murray canyons beneath rocky peaks.

  3. 03

    Joshua Tree National Park

About an hour northeast, the park’s Joshua trees, boulder piles and dark skies attract hikers, climbers and photographers, especially during the cooler months.

  4. 04

    Palm Springs Art Museum

The downtown museum shows modern and contemporary art, Native American and Western works, and architecture and design exhibitions reflecting the city’s modernist heritage.

  5. 05

    Sunnylands

In Rancho Mirage, the former Annenberg estate has hosted presidents and world leaders, and its center and desert gardens are open to visitors, with house tours by reservation.

  6. 06

    Palm Canyon Drive

Palm Springs’ main street runs through downtown and the Uptown Design District, lined with restaurants, vintage and design shops, galleries and the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
