Lake Havasu City was planned in the 1960s by industrialist Robert McCulloch, who famously bought the London Bridge and had it rebuilt over a channel cut through to an island in the lake. Today the city of more than 50,000 lines the Arizona shore of Lake Havasu, a reservoir on the Colorado River formed by Parker Dam. Tourism, boating and retirement drive the economy, along with healthcare, construction and a cluster of performance boat builders. Winter brings snowbirds from the north, spring brings college crowds and summer weekends bring boaters from Southern California and Phoenix.

The drive from Phoenix takes about three hours, and from Las Vegas or the Los Angeles area it is longer, across empty desert highways. Lake Havasu City Airport on the north side of town is a few minutes from marinas and lakefront homes, so flying private lets you be on the water the same afternoon. From here, boaters cruise to Copper Canyon, paddle through Topock Gorge in the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge or head down to the Parker Strip, and off-road enthusiasts explore the surrounding desert mountains.
