Grand Canyon Village is the main settlement on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, a cluster of historic hotels, cabins, shops and park facilities perched directly on the canyon’s edge. Its landmarks date to the early railroad era, including the El Tovar Hotel, Hopi House and Bright Angel Lodge, several of them shaped by architect Mary Colter. Nearly everything here exists to serve the millions of people who come each year to stand at the rim, walk below it or ride a mule into the canyon, and the gateway town of Tusayan just south of the park adds hotels, restaurants and helicopter tour operators.

The drive from Phoenix takes three and a half hours or more, and from Las Vegas longer still, which is why many visitors only manage a rushed stop at a couple of overlooks. Grand Canyon National Park Airport in Tusayan is a few miles from the park entrance, so flying private makes a relaxed day trip realistic, or an overnight at a rim lodge with sunset and sunrise over the canyon. From the village, free shuttle buses run along Hermit Road and to the trailheads, and Desert View lies about 25 miles east.

Things to do in Grand Canyon Village

When to go. The South Rim is open all year. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable weather for walking the rim and hiking into the canyon, though temperatures inside the canyon are far hotter than at the top. Summer is the busiest season, with afternoon monsoon storms in July and August. Winter brings snow at the rim’s roughly 7,000-foot elevation, cold mornings and far smaller crowds, and snow-dusted canyon views that many visitors consider the most beautiful of the year.

  1. 01

Mather Point and the Rim Trail

The busiest overlook, beside the main visitor center, is the starting point for the Rim Trail, a largely paved path along the canyon’s edge past the village and its viewpoints.

  2. 02

    Bright Angel Trail

Beginning beside Bright Angel Lodge, the park’s best-known trail descends through layers of rock toward the Colorado River. Even a short walk down rewards with views, but the climb back is demanding.

  3. 03

    Hermit Road

West of the village, this scenic road is served by park shuttle buses most of the year and links overlooks such as Hopi Point and Mohave Point, popular for sunset.

  4. 04

    Desert View Watchtower

About 25 miles east, Mary Colter’s 1932 stone tower overlooks a sweeping bend of the Colorado River and holds murals by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie.

  5. 05

El Tovar Hotel and Hopi House

The rim’s grand 1905 hotel, with its log-and-stone lobby and dining room, stands beside Colter’s Hopi House, which sells Native American art and crafts.

  6. 06

    Grand Canyon Railway

Vintage trains run between Williams and the South Rim depot in the village, with entertainers on board and time at the rim before the return trip.
