Things to do in Mariposa

Mariposa is the county seat of Mariposa County, a Gold Rush town in the Sierra Nevada foothills along Highway 140. Its two-story courthouse, built in 1854, is the oldest courthouse in continuous use west of the Rocky Mountains, and the main street still holds 19th-century storefronts, saloons and historic hotels. Today the local economy depends on tourism linked to Yosemite National Park, along with ranching, county government and small businesses serving visitors and residents.

  1. 01

    Yosemite Valley

Granite walls including El Capitan and Half Dome rise above meadows and the Merced River, with Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Fall and easy valley floor trails among the highlights.

  2. 02

    Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias

Near Yosemite’s south entrance, the park’s largest sequoia grove holds more than 500 mature trees, including the Grizzly Giant, reached by trails from a shuttle-served welcome plaza.

  3. 03

    Glacier Point

From this overlook high above the valley, visitors take in Half Dome, Vernal and Nevada falls and the High Sierra. The road is typically open from late spring into fall.

Swollen by snowmelt in spring, the Merced River along Highway 140 offers some of California’s best whitewater rafting, while calmer summer stretches suit wading and fishing.
