Scottsdale stretches from the edge of Tempe north into the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, and few cities its size draw as many affluent visitors. Luxury resorts and spas, championship golf, Old Town’s galleries and steakhouses and a polished Western identity anchor a large tourism economy. The city is also a serious place to do business: the Scottsdale Airpark, a corporate district that grew up around the airport, is one of the largest employment centers in Arizona, and HonorHealth and the Mayo Clinic’s Arizona campus make healthcare a major employer.

Scottsdale Airport sits in the middle of the Airpark, a few minutes from north Scottsdale’s resorts and gated communities and well away from Sky Harbor’s traffic. Flying private lets you land close to your hotel, play a round in the afternoon and leave when it suits you, or hop on to Sedona, Tucson, Las Vegas or Southern California. The calendar keeps the city busy: the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in January, the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale in February and spring training at Salt River Fields and Scottsdale Stadium. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West rewards anyone interested in architecture.

Things to do in Scottsdale

When to go. Scottsdale’s high season runs from late October through April, with mild, sunny days that suit golf, hiking and long lunches outdoors. January brings the Barrett-Jackson auction, February the WM Phoenix Open, and February and March the busiest weeks of spring training, so book well ahead. Summer temperatures often top 110 degrees and the monsoon arrives in July, but resorts discount heavily and spas, pools and early tee times make it workable.
