Flagstaff sits at about 7,000 feet on the Colorado Plateau, surrounded by the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in the world and crowned by the San Francisco Peaks, home to Humphreys Peak, Arizona’s highest point. Northern Arizona University gives the city a college-town energy, Flagstaff Medical Center serves as the region’s trauma center and W. L. Gore runs several medical products plants here. Lowell Observatory, where Pluto was discovered in 1930, helped make Flagstaff the world’s first International Dark Sky City, and Route 66 and the railroad still run through the historic downtown.

Flagstaff Pulliam Airport sits on the south edge of town, and flying private avoids the two-plus hour climb up Interstate 17 from Phoenix or the long haul from Las Vegas. The city is the classic base for the Grand Canyon, whose South Rim is roughly an hour and a half north, and Sedona is a scenic drive down Oak Creek Canyon. Closer in, visitors explore Sinagua cliff dwellings at Walnut Canyon, the lava fields of Sunset Crater, mountain biking and hiking on the Peaks, and winter skiing at Arizona Snowbowl.

Things to do in Flagstaff

When to go. Flagstaff has four real seasons. Summer is a welcome escape from desert heat, with highs mostly in the 70s and 80s and monsoon thunderstorms most afternoons in July and August. Late September and early October bring golden aspens on the Peaks, a favorite time for hiking. Winter brings snow and the ski season at Arizona Snowbowl, while spring can be windy with lingering snow at higher elevations.
