Stockton sits on the San Joaquin River at the eastern edge of the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta, and a deepwater ship channel makes it one of California’s inland seaports. The Port of Stockton handles bulk cargo such as fertilizer, cement and agricultural products, and the surrounding area along Interstate 5 and Highway 99 has become a major hub for warehousing and distribution. San Joaquin County agriculture, including cherries, walnuts, almonds and wine grapes, remains central to the economy, and University of the Pacific anchors the city’s north side.

Stockton Metropolitan Airport sits just south of the city, convenient for distribution centers in Stockton, Tracy and Manteca as well as farm and port business. A private flight avoids the traffic on Interstate 580 through the Altamont Pass from the Bay Area and makes same-day trips from Southern California easy. Leisure travelers use Stockton as a base for Lodi’s wineries, about 15 miles north, for houseboating and fishing on the Delta’s maze of waterways, and for the Gold Country towns of the Sierra foothills.

Things to do in Stockton

When to go. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons in Stockton, with mild temperatures and pleasant evenings. Summers are hot and dry, though breezes from the Delta often cool the nights, and the waterways are busy with boaters. Harvest season in Lodi’s vineyards runs from late summer into fall. Winter is mild but can bring dense tule fog across the valley, so allow some flexibility during those months.
