Los Angeles is the center of the American entertainment business, with studios and production companies spread from Burbank and Hollywood to Culver City and Santa Monica, but its economy reaches far beyond film and television. The neighboring ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach form the busiest container port complex in the country, and aerospace, fashion, real estate, finance and a growing technology sector all run deep here. UCLA, USC and Caltech anchor a serious research community, and places like Beverly Hills, Pasadena and the Westside each function almost as cities of their own.

In a region this spread out, distance is measured in freeway time rather than miles, so the airfield you choose matters as much as the flight. Instead of working through the terminals at LAX, you can depart from Van Nuys, Burbank, Long Beach or Hawthorne, whichever sits closest to your day, and fly direct to Napa, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara or a ranch in the Sierra. Visitors come for the Getty, Griffith Observatory, the beaches from Malibu to Manhattan Beach, Dodgers and Lakers games and restaurants in Koreatown, Little Tokyo and the San Gabriel Valley.

Things to do in Los Angeles

When to go. Los Angeles works year-round, though each season has its own character. Late spring brings “May Gray” and “June Gloom,” when a marine layer keeps the coast cool and overcast into the afternoon. Late summer and early fall are the warmest months, and autumn Santa Ana winds can bring hot, dry spells. Awards season, from January through the Academy Awards in early spring, fills Westside hotels and restaurants, and Pasadena’s Rose Parade opens every new year.
