Visalia is the seat of Tulare County, one of the most productive agricultural counties in the United States, known especially for dairy and citrus. The city serves as the business and service center for the southern San Joaquin Valley, with food processing, distribution, health care and agricultural finance as major employers. Each February, the World Ag Expo in nearby Tulare draws farmers, equipment makers and buyers from around the world to one of the largest agricultural shows anywhere.

Visalia is also the closest valley city to Sequoia National Park, whose Ash Mountain entrance lies about an hour east beyond the small town of Three Rivers. Los Angeles is about three and a half hours away by car and the Bay Area even farther, so flying into Visalia Municipal Airport, just west of town, makes farm visits and trips to the Expo far easier. For leisure travelers, a short flight followed by a scenic drive puts the General Sherman Tree, Moro Rock and the Giant Forest within reach, with Kings Canyon National Park just beyond.

Things to do in Visalia

When to go. February brings the World Ag Expo to Tulare, and early spring paints the foothills with wildflowers. Spring is also the season for whitewater rafting on the Kaweah River. Summers are hot in the valley but pleasantly cool among the sequoias, which sit thousands of feet higher. Fall is mild and less crowded. In winter, snow can bring chain requirements on the Generals Highway, while the valley sees occasional tule fog.
