Mammoth Lakes is a mountain resort town in the Eastern Sierra, built around Mammoth Mountain, a volcanic peak that rises above 11,000 feet. The mountain’s high elevation and heavy snowfall give it one of the longest ski seasons in California, often running well into spring. Tourism, hospitality and vacation homes, many owned by Southern California families, drive the local economy, and the town is the base for June Mountain, the Mammoth Lakes Basin and some of the best trout fishing in the state.
The drive from Los Angeles takes about five hours up U.S. 395, longer on holiday weekends or when storms move through. Mammoth Yosemite Airport is about 15 minutes from town, so a private flight turns an all-day drive into a short trip and makes a long ski weekend practical. In summer, Mammoth is a launching point for Devils Postpile, the tufa towers of Mono Lake, hot springs, mountain biking and Yosemite’s Tioga Pass entrance, roughly an hour north when the road is open. Winter mountain weather can shift quickly, so allow some flexibility.

Things to do in Mammoth Lakes
When to go. Ski season typically opens in November and, in good snow years, can run into late spring. The Eastern Sierra trout opener on the last Saturday of April brings anglers to the lakes and streams. Summer offers warm days, cool nights and access to Devils Postpile and Tioga Road, which usually opens by early summer. Late September and October bring brilliant aspen color around June Lake and Rock Creek, and winter storms can close roads.
