Things to do in Monterey

Monterey was California’s capital under Spanish and Mexican rule, and later a sardine-canning center made famous by John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. Today the peninsula’s economy rests on tourism, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and a group of institutions that includes the Naval Postgraduate School and the Defense Language Institute. The neighboring Salinas Valley, often called the Salad Bowl of the World, supplies much of the country’s lettuce and greens, and Pacific Grove, Carmel-by-the-Sea and Pebble Beach complete the peninsula.

    Built in a former cannery on the edge of the bay, the aquarium is known for its towering kelp forest exhibit, sea otters, jellyfish galleries and open-ocean tank.

    Pebble Beach and 17-Mile Drive

    The scenic toll road winds past the Lone Cypress, rocky coves and mansions to Pebble Beach Golf Links, a frequent U.S. Open host open to public play.
