Things to do in Cookeville

Cookeville is the hub of Tennessee’s Upper Cumberland region, set on the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau along Interstate 40 between Nashville and Knoxville. Tennessee Technological University, known for its engineering programs, is a major presence, and Cookeville Regional Medical Center, manufacturing plants and regional retail round out the economy. The town has grown steadily as a quieter alternative to the big cities, and its downtown around the historic depot has restaurants and shops.

  1. 01

    Burgess Falls State Park

A trail along the Falling Water River passes a series of waterfalls, ending at the dramatic main falls that drop more than 130 feet into a gorge.

  2. 02

This popular swimming hole beneath a 75-foot waterfall requires a rugged hike through the gorge, and a permit is needed to enter the gorge area.

  3. 03

    Center Hill Lake

This deep, clear reservoir surrounded by wooded bluffs offers boating, houseboating, fishing and lakeside state parks within a short drive of town.

  4. 04

    Dale Hollow Lake

Straddling the Kentucky line, the lake is famous for crystal-clear water and the world-record smallmouth bass caught there in 1955, with marinas and houseboats.

  5. 05

    Cookeville Depot Museum

The restored 1909 Tennessee Central Railway depot downtown showcases railroad history, with historic cars on display beside the station.

  6. 06

    Window Cliffs State Natural Area

A rugged hike with many creek crossings leads to a narrow limestone ridge with natural arches, or windows, carved into it.
