Things to do in New Bern

New Bern was founded in 1710 by Swiss and German settlers, who named it after Bern, and it later served as North Carolina’s colonial capital. Set where the Neuse and Trent rivers meet, the town is known for its historic downtown, its waterfront and the bear statues that nod to its namesake. Pharmacist Caleb Bradham created the drink that became Pepsi-Cola here in the 1890s. The economy draws on healthcare, manufacturing, tourism and retirement living, and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in nearby Havelock is one of the region’s largest employers.
