Boone is the center of North Carolina’s High Country, a cluster of mountain towns that includes Blowing Rock, Banner Elk and Linville at elevations of more than 3,000 feet. Appalachian State University gives the town a young, outdoorsy energy, while tourism, second homes, construction and healthcare carry the rest of the economy. Many of the area’s homes belong to families from Charlotte, Florida and the Southeast lowlands who come for cool summers and colorful falls.

Reaching the High Country by car means winding two-lane mountain roads, about two hours from Charlotte and four or more from Raleigh. Flying private into Ashe County Airport in Jefferson, Avery County Airport near Spruce Pine or Foothills Regional in Morganton cuts the trip dramatically and saves you the climb from the Piedmont after a long week. Visitors come for the Blue Ridge Parkway, Grandfather Mountain, summer theater, golf at private clubs, skiing at Sugar Mountain, Beech Mountain and Appalachian Ski Mountain in winter and App State football in the fall.

Things to do in Boone

When to go. The High Country shines in summer, when highs are typically in the 70s while the lowlands swelter, and the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games bring Scottish athletics and music in July. Fall foliage peaks around early to mid-October, the busiest time of the year. Winter brings skiing and snowboarding at local resorts, though snow and ice can complicate mountain roads. Spring arrives late, with rhododendron and mountain laurel blooming in May and June.
