Greenville is the largest city in eastern North Carolina’s coastal plain and the home of East Carolina University, whose Brody School of Medicine and the large regional medical center beside it make healthcare the city’s dominant industry. Pharmaceutical manufacturing, education and agriculture fill out the economy, and the university’s football, basketball and baseball programs give the city a lively sports calendar. Uptown Greenville, along the Tar River, has grown with new restaurants, apartments and the Town Common park.

Eastern North Carolina is spread out and served by relatively few airline routes, so getting here from Charlotte, Atlanta or the Northeast often means a connection and a long drive. Pitt-Greenville Airport is just a few minutes from campus and the medical center, making private flights convenient for physicians, medical device representatives, alumni and families of students. Raleigh is about an hour and a half away by car, and the Outer Banks and Crystal Coast are a quick flight. Visitors also come for whole-hog barbecue in Ayden and historic river towns nearby.
