Things to do in Outer Banks

The Outer Banks are a long chain of barrier islands curving out into the Atlantic, from the wild horses of Corolla in the north to Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke in the south. The Wright brothers made the first powered flight on the dunes at Kill Devil Hills in 1903, and the islands also hold the story of the Lost Colony on Roanoke Island, the shipwrecks of the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” and a string of famous lighthouses. The economy is built on tourism, vacation rentals, second homes, construction and commercial and charter fishing.

  1. 01

    Wright Brothers National Memorial

The granite monument at Kill Devil Hills marks where Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first powered flights in 1903, with a visitor center, reproductions of their camp and markers for each flight.

  2. 02

    Jockey’s Ridge State Park

In Nags Head, the tallest active sand dune system on the Atlantic coast is a favorite for hang gliding lessons, kite flying and watching the sunset over the sound.

  3. 03

    Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

The black-and-white spiral tower near Buxton, the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States, was famously moved inland in 1999 and is the centerpiece of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

  4. 04

    Corolla Wild Horses

At the northern end of the islands, descendants of Spanish mustangs roam the beaches and dunes beyond the paved road, and guided four-wheel-drive tours bring visitors to see them.

  5. 05

The Lost Colony and Elizabethan Gardens

On Roanoke Island in Manteo, a long-running outdoor drama retells the story of the 1587 English colony each summer, beside formal gardens created in its memory.

  6. 06

    Duck

This small soundside town is known for its boardwalk, shops and restaurants, and for some of the most sought-after rental homes on the northern beaches.
