The Outer Banks are a long chain of barrier islands curving out into the Atlantic, from the wild horses of Corolla in the north to Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke in the south. The Wright brothers made the first powered flight on the dunes at Kill Devil Hills in 1903, and the islands also hold the story of the Lost Colony on Roanoke Island, the shipwrecks of the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” and a string of famous lighthouses. The economy is built on tourism, vacation rentals, second homes, construction and commercial and charter fishing.
Getting here by car is the challenge. The islands are several hours from Raleigh and farther from Washington or Richmond, and on summer Saturdays, when rental weeks turn over, traffic backs up for miles at the bridges. Flying private avoids all of that: Dare County Regional Airport in Manteo and First Flight Airport, right beside the Wright Brothers National Memorial, put you minutes from the beach houses of Nags Head, Kitty Hawk and Duck. Visitors come for wide beaches, kiteboarding on the sound, offshore fishing from Oregon Inlet and seafood dinners on the water.

Things to do in Outer Banks
When to go. Summer is peak season on the Outer Banks, with warm water, full rental calendars and heavy Saturday traffic. Late May and September through October are the local favorites, with warm days, open restaurants, fewer crowds and excellent fishing as the fall runs arrive. Hurricane season runs from June through November and can close the road to Hatteras, so watch forecasts and keep plans flexible. Winter is quiet and windy, appealing to anglers and those who like empty beaches.
