Winston-Salem took its name from the merger of two towns: Salem, founded by Moravian settlers in 1766, and Winston, which grew rich on tobacco and textiles as the home of R.J. Reynolds and Hanes. Today Wake Forest University and its academic medical center are the largest economic engines, and the Innovation Quarter has turned former tobacco buildings downtown into labs, offices and apartments. The University of North Carolina School of the Arts adds a strong cultural life, and Krispy Kreme was founded here.
Smith Reynolds Airport, just a few miles from downtown and once the home of Piedmont Airlines, is a convenient base for private flights, without the trip out to the Triad’s main airline airport. That makes it simple for medical professionals, executives and parents visiting Wake Forest to fly in and out on their own schedule. Leisure visitors come for Old Salem’s restored Moravian village, the art and gardens at Reynolda, the wineries of the Yadkin Valley and nearby mountain parks, with the Blue Ridge Parkway a little over an hour away.
