Charlotte has grown into the second-largest banking center in the United States, with Bank of America’s headquarters tower anchoring Uptown and Truist and Wells Fargo running major operations nearby. Energy, healthcare, logistics and a fast-growing technology sector round out an economy that keeps executives, consultants and bankers shuttling in and out every week. The city is also the hub of American stock car racing: most NASCAR teams are based within an hour’s drive, many of them around Mooresville and Concord.

Charlotte Douglas is one of the busiest connecting airports in the country, which is great for reaching big cities and less helpful when you need to be in a small town by mid-morning. Flying private from a regional field such as Concord-Padgett or Charlotte-Monroe Executive puts the Blue Ridge, Pinehurst’s fairways and the beaches of the Carolinas each roughly an hour away instead of a long half-day on the interstate. In town, visitors fill South End’s breweries and restaurants, catch the Panthers or Hornets, raft at the U.S. National Whitewater Center and spend lake weekends on Lake Norman.

Things to do in Charlotte

When to go. Spring and fall are Charlotte’s best seasons, with mild temperatures, blooming dogwoods in April and comfortable football weather from September into November. Memorial Day weekend brings the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, one of the biggest days on the NASCAR calendar, and hotels fill across the region. Summers are hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, while winters are generally mild, though an occasional ice storm can disrupt travel.
