Pinehurst was laid out in the 1890s as a winter resort, with a village plan by Frederick Law Olmsted’s firm, and golf soon became its reason for being. Donald Ross designed Pinehurst No. 2, which has hosted the U.S. Open several times, and the USGA has made the village an anchor site for future championships and opened a headquarters campus here. Together with neighboring Southern Pines and Aberdeen, the Sandhills hold dozens of courses, from the resort’s numbered layouts to Pine Needles and Mid Pines, and golf, hospitality, real estate and retirement living drive the local economy.

The Sandhills sit between the Triangle and Charlotte, about an hour and a half from Raleigh and two hours from Charlotte by car, and much farther from the Northeast and Midwest cities many golfers call home. Moore County Airport is just a few minutes from the resort, so a private flight puts a foursome on the first tee the morning they leave home. The area is also known for horse country around Southern Pines, longleaf pine forests and a walkable village of shops, inns and restaurants.
