Chapel Hill is home to the University of North Carolina, which welcomed its first students in 1795 and is often described as the oldest public university in the country. Life in town revolves around the campus, from historic quads and the Old Well to UNC Health’s medical center and the research labs that help power the Research Triangle. Duke University and downtown Durham are about ten miles east, and Research Triangle Park is a short drive away, so visiting faculty, recruiters, physicians and biotech executives come through constantly.

Raleigh-Durham International is a short drive away, but the airlines rarely line up with a game day or graduation weekend. Flying private lets families, alumni and recruiters set their own schedule, arriving in time for kickoff at Kenan Stadium or a game at the Dean Smith Center and heading home the same night. It also makes visits to several colleges in one trip practical. Between events, visitors walk Franklin Street’s bars and restaurants, browse the galleries and cafes of neighboring Carrboro and explore the gardens and trails around both campuses.

Things to do in Chapel Hill

When to go. Fall is Chapel Hill’s signature season, with football Saturdays at Kenan Stadium and mild, colorful weather from September into November. Basketball takes over from November through March, and big home games fill the town. Spring brings blooming dogwoods and commencement weekend in May, when hotel rooms are booked far in advance. Summers are hot and humid and the campus is quieter, which can make for easier visits and meetings.
