Beaufort is one of North Carolina’s oldest towns, a fishing and shipping port where Front Street’s eighteenth- and nineteenth-century homes look across Taylor’s Creek to wild islands. Blackbeard’s flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, ran aground at Beaufort Inlet in 1718, and artifacts from the wreck are now on display in town. Beaufort anchors the Crystal Coast with Morehead City, Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle, where the economy turns on tourism, boating, commercial and recreational fishing, marine research and second homes.

The Crystal Coast is roughly three hours from Raleigh by car and well beyond that from Charlotte, Richmond or Washington. Michael J. Smith Field sits just outside town, so flying private gets you from home to a waterfront table or a boat slip in very little time. Visitors come for the maritime history, sailing and paddling, seafood restaurants along the Morehead City waterfront and day trips to Cape Lookout National Seashore. Anglers come for the Gulf Stream, and the region’s offshore fishing tournaments, led by the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, are some of the best known on the East Coast.

Things to do in Beaufort

When to go. Late spring through fall is the season on the Crystal Coast, with warm water and long days for boating and beaches. The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament takes over Morehead City in June, and fall brings the region’s famous false albacore run along with pleasant weather. Summers are hot and humid, and hurricane season runs from June through November, so keep plans flexible. Winter is quiet and mild, a good time for history and seafood.
