Raleigh is North Carolina’s capital and one point of the Research Triangle, the region formed with Durham and Chapel Hill around three major research universities. Research Triangle Park, a short drive west of the city, houses research and development centers for technology, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and NC State University feeds the region with engineers and scientists. Government, lobbying, healthcare and a growing roster of corporate offices bring a steady flow of business travelers downtown and to the office parks around the beltline.

Raleigh-Durham International sits between the cities and handles most commercial traffic, but the rest of the state is surprisingly spread out. The Outer Banks, Asheville and the Crystal Coast are each several hours away by car, and a private flight from RDU, Raleigh Executive Jetport in Sanford or Triangle North Executive Airport in Louisburg turns those trips into easy day visits or long weekends. Pinehurst’s golf courses are within easy reach too. In the city itself, visitors find free state museums, a lively downtown dining scene, Wolfpack sports and an extensive greenway system winding through wooded parks.

Things to do in Raleigh

When to go. Raleigh’s spring is its showpiece, with azaleas and dogwoods blooming across older neighborhoods in late March and April. Fall is equally pleasant, and the North Carolina State Fair takes over the fairgrounds for about ten days in October, drawing huge crowds. Summers are hot and humid with afternoon storms, and winters are mild with only occasional snow or ice. Legislative sessions and university calendars can tighten hotel availability downtown.
