Things to do in Pawleys Island

Pawleys Island is one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast, a small barrier island where rice planters’ families once escaped the summer heat. It has kept a deliberately low-key character, with weathered beach houses, no high-rises and a self-described “arrogantly shabby” style, in contrast to the high-rise skyline of Myrtle Beach to the north. Golf, second homes and tourism drive the economy, along with Georgetown, one of the state’s oldest towns, a few miles south, and the Pawleys Island hammock, first made here in the 1880s, is famous across the country.
