Camden is one of the oldest inland towns in South Carolina, founded in the 1730s, and was the site of two important Revolutionary War battles. Like Aiken, it became a winter resort for wealthy Northerners in the late 1800s, who brought their horses with them, and it remains a center of the equestrian world. Springdale Race Course hosts the Carolina Cup, one of the country’s most famous steeplechase races, and the town is surrounded by horse farms, polo fields and training centers. The economy also includes manufacturing, healthcare and tourism.
Camden is about 35 miles northeast of Columbia, and the drive from Charlotte or Charleston takes around two hours. Flying private into Woodward Field, just a few minutes from downtown, makes race weekends, horse-buying trips and visits to second homes far simpler. Visitors explore the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site, browse antique shops along Broad Street, paddle Goodale State Park’s cypress-filled pond and enjoy Lake Wateree.
