Aiken became a Winter Colony for wealthy Northern families in the late 1800s, drawn by its mild climate and sandy soil, perfect for horses. That tradition lives on today: Aiken is one of the country’s most important equestrian towns, with thoroughbred training, steeplechase, polo, fox hunting and eventing, and the Hitchcock Woods, one of the largest urban forests in the country, crisscrossed by riding trails. The Savannah River Site, the University of South Carolina Aiken and a growing community of retirees and second-home owners also shape the local economy.
Aiken is about two and a half hours from Atlanta and Charlotte by car and about half an hour from Augusta, which makes it a popular base for Masters week. Flying private into Aiken Regional Airport, just north of town, puts you minutes from downtown and the horse farms, making it easy to come for a race weekend, buy a horse or visit a second home. Visitors enjoy walks in Hopelands Gardens, morning workouts at the training track, polo on Sunday afternoons and dining along the historic downtown’s shaded parkways.

When to go. Spring is Aiken’s busiest season, when the Aiken Triple Crown of trials, steeplechase and polo brings crowds in March and Masters week follows in April. Fall brings more steeplechase and polo, along with mild, comfortable weather. Winters are cool and pleasant, the traditional season for training horses and riding in the Hitchcock Woods.
