Things to do in Lake Placid

Lake Placid is the heart of the Adirondack High Peaks and one of the few places in the world to have hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1932 and 1980. That Olympic legacy still defines the village, with training facilities, ski jumps, a bobsled track and arenas that continue to host international competitions. Main Street runs along Mirror Lake with outfitters, restaurants and shops, while rustic great camps and lakeside lodges serve visitors who come for skiing, hiking, paddling and fishing.

  1. 01

    Whiteface Mountain

The Olympic alpine venue offers the greatest vertical drop in the Northeast, and in summer the Veterans Memorial Highway climbs nearly to the summit for views across the High Peaks.

  2. 02

    Lake Placid Olympic Museum

Inside the Olympic Center, the museum tells the story of the 1932 and 1980 Games, including the Miracle on Ice, when the U.S. hockey team defeated the Soviet Union.

  3. 03

    Olympic Jumping Complex

Visitors can ride up to the top of the ski jump towers for views over the mountains and, in season, watch athletes train on the jumps.

  4. 04

    Mount Van Hoevenberg

The Olympic sliding center offers rides on a bobsled with a professional pilot, along with Nordic skiing and snowshoeing on trails through the forest.

  5. 05

    Mirror Lake

The small lake along Main Street is ideal for paddling and swimming in summer, and in winter it hosts skating, a toboggan chute and dog sledding on the ice.

  6. 06

    High Falls Gorge

Along the Ausable River near Wilmington, walkways and bridges lead past a series of waterfalls cutting through ancient granite, with trails open year-round.
