Lake Placid is the heart of the Adirondack High Peaks and one of the few places in the world to have hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1932 and 1980. That Olympic legacy still defines the village, with training facilities, ski jumps, a bobsled track and arenas that continue to host international competitions. Main Street runs along Mirror Lake with outfitters, restaurants and shops, while rustic great camps and lakeside lodges serve visitors who come for skiing, hiking, paddling and fishing.
The Adirondacks are vast, and Lake Placid is a long drive from almost anywhere: about five hours from New York City and close to three from Albany on winding roads for the final stretch. Flying private into the village’s own airport or nearby Adirondack Regional Airport in Saranac Lake puts you minutes from your lodging and the trailheads. That makes a ski weekend at Whiteface or a summer climb of Mount Marcy a realistic plan rather than an expedition. Families also come for summer camps, horse shows and the many lakes in the area.
