Lake George stretches more than thirty miles through the southeastern Adirondacks, and its clear water, islands and mountain shoreline have drawn summer visitors since the Gilded Age, when wealthy families built grand estates along its western shore. The village at its southern end has a busy waterfront with steamboat cruises, beaches, shops and the reconstructed Fort William Henry, while quieter towns such as Bolton Landing and Hague have resorts, marinas and lakefront camps. The economy runs on tourism, second homes and hospitality.
The lake is about three and a half hours by car from New York City, and summer traffic on the Northway can make it longer. Flying private into Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport near Glens Falls, about fifteen minutes from the village, gets you onto the water much faster. It also makes Lake George an easy pairing with Saratoga during racing season, a ski weekend at Gore Mountain, or a trip north into the Adirondacks. In summer the lake is about boating and swimming, and in fall the hillsides turn color.
