Saratoga Springs has drawn visitors since the nineteenth century, first for its mineral springs and then for Saratoga Race Course, one of the oldest sporting venues in the country. Each summer the racing meet transforms the city, bringing owners, trainers, bloodstock agents and fans for weeks of racing, yearling sales and parties. Beyond the track, Skidmore College, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and a Broadway lined with Victorian buildings, shops and restaurants keep the city lively year-round, while the nearby semiconductor industry has added a business dimension.

Saratoga is about three and a half hours from New York City by car, and summer weekends bring heavy traffic north on the Thruway and the Northway. Flying private into Saratoga County Airport, just a few miles from downtown, puts you near the track and the springs without the long drive, and makes it easy to come up for a single racing day. The city is also a gateway to Lake George, the Adirondacks and the Hudson Valley, and the restored Spa State Park offers mineral baths, golf and trails.

Things to do in Saratoga Springs

When to go. Summer is Saratoga’s high season, when the racing meet runs from mid-July through Labor Day and SPAC hosts orchestras, ballet and concerts. Hotels fill quickly during the Travers Stakes in late August. Fall is beautiful and calmer, with foliage, apple picking and easy access to the Adirondacks. Winters are cold and snowy, and the city slows down, though downtown restaurants stay busy and Victorian Streetwalk brightens early December.
