Albany has been the capital of New York since 1797, and state government still shapes its economy and its skyline, from the grand State Capitol to the modernist towers of the Empire State Plaza. Around it the Capital Region has built a strong base in higher education, health care and technology, with the University at Albany, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, Albany Medical Center and a semiconductor industry anchored by the GlobalFoundries plant in Malta. Lobbyists, lawyers, researchers and engineers keep the city busy when the legislature is in session and well beyond.

Albany sits at a crossroads, roughly two and a half hours by car from New York City and longer from Boston, Buffalo or Washington. Flying private turns those trips into easy same-day returns, whether you are coming for a hearing at the Capitol or a meeting in Tech Valley. It also puts you close to the leisure country around the city: Saratoga Springs and its racetrack, the Berkshires to the east, the Adirondacks to the north and the Hudson Valley to the south.

Things to do in Albany

When to go. May brings the Tulip Festival in Washington Park, a celebration of Albany’s Dutch roots, and the start of the outdoor season. Summer is warm and busy, with Saratoga’s racing meet and Tanglewood in the Berkshires both an easy drive away. Fall foliage in the surrounding hills is excellent from late September through mid-October. Winters are cold and snowy, though the legislative session from January through June keeps government travel steady.
