Montauk is the easternmost point of New York State, a fishing village at the end of the South Fork that has become one of the Northeast’s favorite beach towns. Its character is more relaxed than the rest of the Hamptons, with surf breaks, seafood shacks, a busy harbor full of sportfishing boats and the Montauk Point Lighthouse standing on bluffs above the Atlantic. Summer residents, surfers, anglers and weekend crowds from the city keep its small hotels and restaurants busy from late spring into fall.
Montauk is also about as far as you can drive from Manhattan without leaving Long Island, and the single main road east can back up for miles on summer weekends. Flying private into Montauk Airport, a short drive from town near Lake Montauk, skips that road entirely. It is an easy way to come out for a long weekend, a charter fishing trip for striped bass or tuna, or a wedding at one of the resorts. Beyond the beaches, visitors hike Camp Hero and Hither Hills and finish the day at sunset spots on the bay.
