The Hamptons, the string of villages and hamlets along Long Island’s South Fork, are the summer home of a large share of New York’s financial, media and fashion world. Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Sag Harbor and Amagansett mix shingled estates and grand hedgerows with potato fields, vineyards, farm stands, art galleries and wide Atlantic beaches. In season, much of Manhattan’s social and business calendar simply moves east, and the local economy is built around second homes, construction, hospitality and the people who serve them.
The catch is the drive. Route 27 narrows to a crawl on summer Fridays, and a trip from the city that should take two hours can stretch to four or more. Flying private into East Hampton Airport turns that ordeal into a short flight, landing a few minutes from Wainscott, Sagaponack and the village of East Hampton, and lets you leave Sunday evening on your own schedule. Once out east, days revolve around the beach, lunch on a terrace, wine tasting on the North Fork, galleries and long dinners.

Things to do in The Hamptons
When to go. The season runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day, peaking in July and August with benefit parties, polo and packed beaches. September is many locals’ favorite month, with warm ocean water, harvest at the farm stands and far less traffic. Late spring is green and calm, and the Hamptons International Film Festival brings screenings to East Hampton and Southampton in October. Winters are quiet, with many restaurants and shops on reduced hours.
