Cooperstown is a small village at the southern end of Otsego Lake, founded by the father of novelist James Fenimore Cooper, who called the lake “Glimmerglass” in his writing. It is best known as home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, which draws fans from every corner of the country, and as the site of summer youth baseball tournaments that bring thousands of families each year. The village also has a notable cultural life, with the Glimmerglass Festival’s opera, the Fenimore Art Museum and the Farmers’ Museum, and the Bassett Healthcare Network is a major regional employer.

Cooperstown is deliberately out of the way, about four hours by car from New York City and more than an hour from Albany or Syracuse on two-lane roads. Flying private into a nearby regional airport lets families arrive for a youth tournament or Hall of Fame Induction Weekend without spending a full day on the road. Beyond baseball, visitors cruise the lake, visit the Brewery Ommegang, golf at the Otesaga Resort and explore the surrounding farm country.

Things to do in Cooperstown

When to go. Summer is Cooperstown’s busiest season, with youth baseball tournaments, the Glimmerglass Festival and Hall of Fame Induction Weekend in July, when the village is packed with fans. Late spring and early fall are pleasant and less crowded, and fall foliage around Otsego Lake is beautiful in early October. Winters are cold and snowy and the village slows considerably, though the Hall of Fame stays open year-round.
