Poughkeepsie is the main city of the mid-Hudson Valley, on the river roughly halfway between New York City and Albany. It is home to Vassar College and Marist College, and IBM, which built large mainframe operations here in the twentieth century, still keeps a presence in the area. Today the region’s economy blends health care, education, technology and a growing hospitality and second-home market as New Yorkers settle in the river towns and farm country of Dutchess and Ulster counties.

The drive up from Manhattan can take two hours or more, and longer on summer and holiday weekends, while trips from Boston or Washington take most of a day. Flying private into Dutchess County Airport, a few miles south of the city, puts you close to Hyde Park, Rhinebeck, Millbrook and the Catskills. It is a convenient way to visit a country house, attend a wedding at an estate venue or a parents’ weekend at Vassar. Visitors come for the Walkway Over the Hudson, the Culinary Institute of America and the Roosevelt and Vanderbilt estates.
