Rochester built its fortune on imaging and precision manufacturing as the home of Eastman Kodak, Xerox’s early years and Bausch & Lomb, and that heritage lives on in a strong cluster of optics, photonics and advanced manufacturing companies. The University of Rochester and its medical center are the region’s largest employers, joined by the Rochester Institute of Technology, and the Wegmans grocery chain is headquartered in the suburbs. Business visitors include engineers, researchers, investors and families arriving for campus visits.

Rochester sits on Lake Ontario between Buffalo and Syracuse, about six hours by car from New York City, and direct flights to many business destinations are limited. Flying private lets you link Rochester with other manufacturing centers and corporate offices in a single day and skip the connection through a hub. The city is also a convenient starting point for the Finger Lakes: Canandaigua Lake is under an hour south, and Seneca and Keuka lakes are easy day trips for wine tasting. In town, the George Eastman Museum, the Strong National Museum of Play and the Eastman School of Music draw visitors year-round.

Things to do in Rochester

When to go. May is lilac season, when the Lilac Festival fills Highland Park. Summer is warm and pleasant, bringing the Rochester International Jazz Festival in June, sailing on Lake Ontario and wine touring in the Finger Lakes. Fall is harvest time at the wineries, with colorful foliage around the lakes into October. Winters are cold and gray with regular lake-effect snow, though the city’s museums and concert halls keep visitors busy indoors.
