Things to do in Monterey

Monterey was California’s capital under Spanish and Mexican rule, and later a sardine-canning center made famous by John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. Today the peninsula’s economy rests on tourism, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and a group of institutions that includes the Naval Postgraduate School and the Defense Language Institute.
